Sight Word Slam

7/9/2014

Kay likes to hit things. (Drums are a perennial favorite!)

Sight words fun - a sure hit!

So when thinking of ways to make learning sight words more fun, a "sight word slap" game was definitely at the top of the list. These swatters from Oriental Trading were just perfect for this.

I wrote some simple sight words we've been working on on a large piece of paper. We did this twice the first day - once with the paper hanging on the wall and once with it on the floor. The wall-hanging version was the favorite, because it allows for a satisfying "smack" noise that raised the fun-factor considerably for this preschooler!
Sight word slam game literacy
My plan was: I'd call out a word, Kay would "slap" it, and then she could call out a word for me to find.

Her plan was: she's say the word, slap it, and then do it again, cutting me out completely. Fine by me. The goal was the words, and that was accomplished.
Fun sight words activity game
This is such a quick game to set up. I left it hanging on the wall when we were done, and she went back to it throughout the day.

  Definitely a "hit" (get it?!).

What we're working on here:
  • simple sight word recognition
  • hand-eye coordination

Love this idea - and I have a whiteboard not yet put up on the wall I could use and he could hit it with his hand. Thank you. Visiting from the Kids Coop

What a fun activity! My son is absolutely obsessed with fly swatters, but he's too young to be able to do this with sight words :) We tried with numbers before, but he also preferred to run away and slam the table or floor :)

I love the physical slamming and the noise play side to this activity. What a great way to engage little ones.

What a fun idea! This would also be a neat way to add some fun to number recognition and basic math. And I'm with Kay ... I think the "smack" noise would definitely raise the fun factor ;-)

What a great idea! I wonder if it would work as well with a chalkboard or dry erase board, so you could replace words as they rub off during play.
