DIY Sound Sensory Blocks

8/14/2015

I've been intrigued with those sound blocks (affiliate link) for awhile.
They seem like such a great multi-sensory and fine-motor-strengthening toy. But, not wanting to buy them (hey, I'm cheap!), we made some easy ones of our own.
Super-easy DIY sensory blocks - a great fine motor toy for babies and toddlers!

Did I say easy? I meant ridiculously easy!

I got the containers at the dollar store (they are the perfect size for little hands!). Kay (who gets a little jealous that I'm baby-sitting her cousin during the day, so I wanted to get her involved in making these) helped me come up with things to put in them. We chose sand, beads, buttons, colored rice, jingle bells...things that would make different sounds when they were shaken.

I used clear packing tape to seal the covers on and presented them to my 7-month-old niece. No surprise - her favorites were the ones with the best noises! (The sand and the soft cubes are nearly always tossed aside!)

She may not be able to stack them yet, but she's a pro at knocking them down if someone else does it! Mostly she just likes picking one up, shaking it like it's the most fun thing in the world, and then repeating the process with the next one. Kay likes them, too. Then again, she has an affinity for anything that can give me a headache!

This is a really cool idea! I like it much better than the uninteresting blocks! And when the kids get older you can do other fine motor and sorting skills like picking out the pink and yellow blocks.

Good idea! I hadn't thought to adapt them as they get older!

Great idea! I put beads in a recycled water bottle when my kids were babies, but did not think about using a box so they could stack them.

We've tried the water bottle, too, but these were certainly easier for little hands to hold. (The preschooler preferred the water bottles though!)

What a neat (and inexpensive!) idea. So simple and yet I can see a wee one really enjoying playing with these - as well as learning a lot while doing so.

LOVE these sensory blocks! Wish I would have thought of it when my kiddos were younger.

I found these at the dollar store today and decided to make the same blocks. I made ten (so far ;) ) out of popcorn kernels, salt, kosher salt, sunflower seeds, coffee grounds, lentils, rice, crushed red pepper, macaroni noodles, and anise seed. :) I plan to make some with paper clips and other things later :) I also used a gold paint sharpie to write on the top what was in the container. I used hot glue to seal them and it worked perfectly.
