Kay is still working on identifying numbers, 1-10, so I thought this game might help. It could be used for letters and sight words as well. I cut out some fish shapes in different colors, and wrote the numbers on them. Then they each got a paper clip (it took two of the colored ones to work).
The rod is made out of a dowel, tied with yarn and a magnet on the end (I used one we had lying around. A bigger magnet would be stronger, and therefore more effective). I would say a number, and she would "go fishing" for it. Then she would say a number and I'd have find it. The more exaggeration the better, as in everything with preschoolers. "Whoa, this 8 is a big one! It's pulling hard!"
We played twice and then moved on, but she asked to play again later and the next day, so I considered it a success.
